I haven't been to summer camp since the 6th grade. So this summer i had the urge to do go again. Last week I packed my shorts and hiking boots and took a 950 mile (one way) drive to central NY state near the small town of Cayuta. While there I attended Cornell University's 2014 Maple Camp. It was held at Arnot Forest (Cornell's maple research forest). Cornell is one of the top programs in the country for maple research. We didn't make smores or sing around the camp fire but I did learn the latest in all aspects of maple production. Instruction was both inside and out in the forest. The 3 day program included everything from sugarbush and tree assessment/ management, energy efficient and increased maple production methods and yields, marketing, to making other products such as maple sugar, maple cream, and maple candy. I'm hoping to add these to the product line I'm the near future. Hey, maybe even maple smores??
